Photo of the week. Russian Olympians exceed fans’ expectations.

The results of Russian athletes at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo so far, after half of the competitions, can be considered quite successful. The team performs without national symbols, even without the name of the country, and is under constant pressure of criticism and suspicion due to past doping scandals, but this did not prevent the athletes from establishing several achievements at once. Maxim Khramtsov won the first Olympic gold in the history of domestic taekwondo. For the first time, Russian tennis players in mixed doubles – Andrei Rublev and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova celebrated their victory. Gymnasts Artur Dalaloyan, Nikita Nagorny, David eiendom Belyavsky and Denis Ablyazin became the first Russians to win gold in the team championship since 1996 (photo 3), and gymnasts Angelina Melnikova, Victoria Listunova, Vladislav Urazova and Lilia Akhaimova – since 1992.

Evgeny Rylov (photo 2) became the first Olympic champion from Russia in swimming in 25 years, winning one more gold along the way. In addition to him, shooter Vitalina Batsarashkina (photo 1) and saber fencer Sofia Pozdnyakova had two awards of the highest standard, one each, in addition to those listed, was won by taekwondo player Vladislav Larin, fencers Sofya Velikaya, Olga Nikitina (sabers in photo 4), Inna Deriglazova, Larisa Korobeinikova, Marta Martyanova and Adelina Zagidullina (rapiers). In total, Russian athletes brought 12 victories to the national team’s piggy bank.

The results are generally in line with the pre-launch forecasts, the President of the Russian Olympic Committee said with restraint.

Stanislav Pozdnyakov. However, it is noteworthy that if before the start of the Olympics the competition was not particularly advertised, as if the success of Russian athletes was in question, now the interest of the media and fans has grown much.
